What is a fossil?
Can you find out what the oldest fossil found in the UK is?
What fossils do you think we will find when we go to West Sussex?
What other facts can you find out about fossils?

  1. Some animals were quickly buried after their death by sinking in mud, being buried in a sandstorm.over time more and more sediment covered the remains.the parts of the animal that did not rot usually the harder pats like bones and teeth were encased in the newly formed sediment.the oldest fossil in west Sussex is mostly from a big animal bu that animal it is a tiger and he died in a rock on a cave.in the end we get a heavy,rock-like copy of the original object - a fossil.the fossil has the shape as the original object, but is chemically more like a rock.

  5. Hard tissues such as shells, teeth and bones are more likely to become fossils, because softer material usually decomposed before they became fossilised today we have the browns of huge dissosaurs that once walked the earth and the shells of giant.

    1. My fossils came from lots of different places David. Some were found on beaches, some from cliffs and some I found on a stony path in a churchyard. Keep looking hard - its amazing what you can find all around you.
